77th Cannes Film Festival



The 77th Cannes Film Festival took place from May 14 to 25, 2024. This year's festival was led by jury president Greta Gerwig, and the Palme d'Or was awarded to Sean Baker for his comedy-drama film "Anora."

Controversy

This year's festival was marked by controversy when Iranian filmmaker Mohammad Rasoulof was sentenced to eight years in prison and flogging for "propaganda against the regime" after his film "The Seed of the Sacred Fig" was selected for the main competition. Despite this, Rasoulof and some of his crew members managed to flee Iran and attend the film's world premiere at the festival. The film received a 12-minute standing ovation, and cast and crew protested in solidarity with Iranian women fighting for their rights.
